Some weldments are easier to build as
sub-assemblies as is the case here. The
sidewalls are fabricated on two smaller tables
and brought to the large table for final fitup.
Once bolted in place, the locators hold a
tolerance of +/-0.004" in flatness, squareness,
parallelism and position accuracy.
Yes, climbing on top of the table (right) is inevitable when working with large weldments. Note that this frame (left) spans over the two tables joined with spacer blocks. There's
plenty of room for the welder to reach everything.
This very large weldment for a huge crane stands over 7' tall.
Spacer blocks come as long as 13' (4,000 mm) for these tall jobs. All the fixture elements are standard, off-the-shelf
components with the exception of the custom blocks
(green colored) which are used to locate several of the bores.
